Members of several farming families served in the Lifesaving Service or as lighthouse keepers. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former lighthouse keeper who tragically lost his life while on duty. One of the story suggests that in 1878, Aaron Sheridan who was serving as a lightkeeper and his wife Julia died when their boat capsized into the sea during the storm. Visitors have reported strange occurrences, such as flickering lights, unexplained footsteps, and even disembodied voices echoing through the empty halls. The spirit of the lighthouse keeper is believed to still tend to his duties, watching over the island and its inhabitants.

One of the most spine-chilling tales associated with South Manitou Island involves the spirits of two young children. Legend has it that these ghostly apparitions appear near the island’s cemetery, their giggles and laughter echoing through the night. Locals believe that the children died during a smallpox outbreak on the island in the 1800s, and their playful spirits continue to roam the land, seeking solace and companionship. There is also a legend where during the cholera outbreak, ships would stop to Bury the dead passengers as the outbreak was at its height and almost all the ships had passengers that became infected and died. Ships would Bury the dead bodies in mass graves. Most of the paranormal phenomena on the island is said to be because of the spirits of the deceased.

Several fishermen who set sail from the island’s shores have vanished without a trace, leaving behind only speculation and unanswered questions. Some theorize that these fishermen fell victim to the island’s treacherous waters, while others suggest a more supernatural explanation, involving the island’s ghostly inhabitants. There was also a tale of a woodcutter who went fishing on his boat while a storm rolled and he never managed to return. A search party led by his wife searched for his body but they didn’t find it. She came to believe that her husband has ran away with some girl from the mainland. For days she would roam the island with a lantern in her hand hoping for her husband to return. She would put on makeup, wear jewellery and victorian dresses thinking her husband might return if she would look beautiful. Some days later villagers found her dead on the beach wearing an evening gown and high heels. People who visit the beach at night can still se her walking in the dark holding a lantern and trying to look beautiful.

The dense forests of South Manitou Island have a mystical allure that captivates all who venture into their depths. However, some visitors have reported an unnerving phenomenon—a chorus of whispers emanating from the woods. These whispers are often accompanied by a feeling of being watched, leading some to believe that the spirits of Native Americans who once inhabited the island still linger, guarding their sacred lands. Throughout the islands’ forests, visitors report shocking cold spots on warm days and sudden views of specters standing in the windows of thoroughly locked and empty houses.

The island’s haunted tales and paranormal phenomena continue to intrigue and fascinate those who dare to delve into its secrets. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the stories of South Manitou Island serve as a chilling reminder that there are still mysteries in this world that defy rational explanation.
